Iwi

Respecting and working alongside iwi is fundamental to the environmental projects NEXT invests in, and our relationship has developed through mutual trust and shared goals.

There is deep respect for te ao Māori (the Māori worldview), where the wellbeing of people is intrinsically linked to the health of nature, and we recognise this as a powerful and sustainable way to approach environmental challenges.

Iwi are the original kaitiaki (guardians) of the land and their traditional knowledge carries deep understandings of nature and responsibility to the iconic species and spaces in Aotearoa that NEXT is seeking to help restore.

By working with iwi, we learn from their tikanga, (customary values and practices), their local mātauranga (knowledge), and we align with their intergenerational philosophy where caring for nature is not just for today but for future generations.

Government

Partnering with the government, through the Department of Conservation (DOC) is vital to delivering transformational environmental projects, and NEXT collaborates with DOC on most of its investments to accelerate and complement its work.

We both support the ambitious goal of a Predator Free New Zealand, and jointly set up Zero Invasive Predators, a research and development entity to help achieve this.

NEXT also has a unique agreement with the government through the Tomorrow Accord that gives assurances to philanthropists that work they fund on conservation land will be sustained in the long term.

Farmers, Private Landowners and Community

Relationships with farmers and private landowners are important for the bigger conservation picture of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Many have a strong interest in the environmental integrity of their operations and the resulting wellbeing of their land. NEXT and its partners can offer innovative solutions to predator management and to support long term protection of the environment. 

Communities bring deep local knowledge, volunteer energy, and long-term commitment to making their community a better place. By working alongside them, we help build projects that are more resilient and we can also share the successes together.
