The Tomorrow Accord

Project Janszoon is restoring the biodiversity of the Abel Tasman National Park.

Part of the project is to remove invasive wilding conifers, which threaten ecosystems in the park.

For ten years, the team at Project Janszoon – along with volunteers, The Abel Tasman Birdsong Trust, businesses, tourism operators, contractors and others – collaborated to remove the wilding conifers from key areas. 

In 2022, when targets on this key biodiversity goal were met, Project Janszoon signed an historic Tomorrow Accord handover agreement with the government to take over maintaining control of wilding conifers. 

In 2026, NEXT is due to retire its investment in Project Janszoon, and the Department of Conservation, through the Tomorrow Accord, will take over maintaining the agreed predator and invasive weed control, so the biodiversity gains in the park are sustained for future generations. 

Taranaki Mounga Project is restoring the biodiversity of the iconic National Park and its surrounds.

One of the initial challenges of the project was removing goats from the mountain, a pest that destroyed ecosystems in the park for nearly a century. 

Taranaki Mounga led an intensive ground and air hunting campaign, including thermal imaging mounted to helicopters, to track the goats and remove them completely from the park. 

Once that ecological target was reached, in 2022, Taranaki Mounga Project enacted The Tomorrow Accord with the government, and the Department of Conservation now takes responsibility for ensuring the Park remains goat free. 

Predator Free South Westland is removing rats, stoats and possums from a 113,000-hectare landscape area in South Westland, to help save the native birds and forest.

This project has been highly successful in its speed and scale and is currently over 90 per cent completed. 

Predator Free South Westland is due to reach its goal in 2026, and the Tomorrow Accord will then be enacted, completing NEXT’s investment in this landmark project. 

In practical terms, this means the Department of Conservation will provide the funding, the Zero Invasive Predators team will continue the maintenance, and the predator-free status is protected for the long term.
